Apple Mac Mini
Two models of he Apple Mac mini desktop computer made by Apple Inc. were released in the US on January 22, 2005. These were released worldwide on a week later and updated versions were released in July, 2005. Models with Intel Core processors were released in February, 2006. On August 7, 2007, new models of the Mac mini were released with 1.83 and 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 processors.
The original Mac mini was announced at the Macworld Conference & Expo at the same time as the iPod shuffle on January 11, 2005. They were both scaled-down products which Apple introduced at lower price points to target a wider and lower-end market. The mini, is quite small for a desktop computer: 6.5 inches wide, 6.5 inches long, and 2 inches tall. The Mac mini resembles Mini-ITX PC designs offered by other manufactuers, The Apple Mac mini weighs 2.9 pounds; and has an external power supply that is roughly one third the size of the computer.
The latest Mac mini ships with Apple's Mac OS X Leopard operating system installed. The Mac mini also includes the Safari web browser and the iLife suite of Apple applications to create and manage videos, music, photos and DVDs. Trial versions of iWork and Microsoft Office are also included. Intel-based Mac minis also come with Front Row, an application which integrates the media management features, and the Apple Remote accessory.
The Mac mini was the first Macintosh desktop that did not include a keyboard or mouse. Apple Computer designers assumed that most of the Mac mini conumers would be "switchers" and that they would already own a USB keyboard and mouse. Consumers could also purchase universal USB input devices of their choice rather than Apple's traditionally "high end" parts and accessory designs.
With the included iLife software and an optional SuperDrive, the Mac mini becomes a compact media player and editor.
